Building confidence with a shy cat

Confidence grows through choice: a safe perch, a patient hello, and the freedom to leave an interaction when it feels like enough.

Give your cat a good view

A quiet raised perch or a familiar hiding place lets a cautious cat observe the room without being in the middle of it. Watching is part of learning, not a sign that they are doing something wrong.

Keep pathways open and avoid turning the cat's safe corner into a place people need to reach through or clean around all day.

Let curiosity set the pace

Spend calm time nearby and allow the cat to initiate the next step. A soft voice, a slow blink, or placing a toy at a comfortable distance can be enough to make the room feel less demanding.

Celebrate the quiet progress: eating while you are nearby, choosing a closer seat, or appearing for a little longer. Trust is usually built in those small decisions.
